The 20-Minute Room-by-Room Home Inventory Checklist for Insurance Claims

Twenty minutes is a starting pass, not a complete appraisal. Focus on documenting what you own; add detail for valuable items afterward.

Minutes 0–3: prepare your inventory

Charge your phone, gather your homeowners or renters policy, and create a room-based list. Record the inventory date and property address.

Minutes 3–15: walk each room

  • Living areas: electronics, furniture, rugs and artwork.
  • Kitchen: appliances, cookware and specialty equipment.
  • Bedrooms: furniture, clothing, jewelry and valuables.
  • Office: computers, monitors, printers and work equipment.
  • Garage and storage: tools, bicycles, equipment and stored belongings.
  • Outdoor areas: patio furniture, grills and other property.

Photograph each room, then important items and their labels. Record brand, model, serial number, approximate purchase date and cost where known. Label estimates clearly.

Minutes 15–20: attach proof and protect access

Add available receipts, warranties, appraisals and policy documents. Keep a copy accessible away from the property. In EnsureLoc, upload your inventory and supporting documents, then choose any Trusted Connection who should have access.

Finish and maintain the inventory

Add omitted items and detailed descriptions after the first pass. Update after major purchases, moves or renovations. Documentation helps support a claim; coverage and payment depend on your policy and insurer.
